Expressionism was a revolutionary art movement. So how does the humble, seemingly harmless potted plant fit into the Expressionists’ repertoire of subjects? I will attempt to answer this question in my presentation at the conference Grüner Wohnen. Pflanzenkulturen um 1800 und um 1900 at Klassik Stiftung Weimar from 27-29 September 2023.

My research on the artistic exchange between Denis Wirth-Miller and Francis Bacon made the cover of this month’s The Burlington Magazine (September 2023, Vol. 165 | No. 1446 Twentieth-century painting)! Many thanks to the editors, what an honour. Thanks to the Francis Bacon MB Art Foundation for initiating and supporting the research project this text is based on.

Just over a year ago I published my book Francis Bacon – In the Mirror of Photography. It brings together for the first time the known sources of Francis Bacon‘s paintings. It has been a wild ride since then: several lectures, a lectureship, a small exhibition, a reprint and good reviews in The Burlington Magazine (3/23) and Peter Truschner’s Fotolot (10/22). What else is in store?

In April 1945 Lee Miller‘s unique artistic gaze led her to create singular photographs of the just liberated Buchenwald concentration camp. Read my research on hitherto undiscussed images from this context in the May issue of The Burlington Magazine (May 2023, Vol. 165 | No. 1442, ‘Photography’).

Francis Bacon – In the Mirror of Photography. Collecting, Preparatory Practice and Painting was favourably reviewed by Martin Hammer in the March 2023 issue of The Burlington Magazine (Vol. 165 | No. 1440, “Delacroix in Africa and Spain: newly discovered sketchbooks”).

It was a great pleasure to conceptualise and host the end-term conference of the Marbach Weimar Wolfenbüttel Research Association at Klassik Stiftung Weimar last week (16/17 February). We asked Is digital better? and discussed this question with colleagues from the international community of digital collection research. Now on to the conference proceedings! WATCH THAT SPACE

The Burlington Magazine just published my review of Denis Wirth-Miller: Landscapes and Beasts at Firstsite in Colchester. Wirth-Miller was Francis Bacon‘s best friend, but does this show help him escape Bacon’s shadow?
